The national standard for safe driving is “driving without becoming involved in preventable crashes”.

 The four major classifications for crashes are:

  • Preventable
  • Non-Preventable Subrogation
  • Non-Preventable No Subrogation
  • Incident

The most recent publication sponsored by OSHA, NETS, NHTSA, states the following:

  • Every 10 seconds an injury occurs.
  • Every 12 minutes someone dies in a motor vehicle crash.
  • Every 5 seconds a crash occurs.
  • Many of these crashes occur during the workday or during the commute to and from work.
  • Employers bear the cost for injuries that occur both on and off the job.

Employees are an employer’s most valuable assets. Workplace driver safety programs not only make good business sense but are
a good employee relations tool, demonstrating that employers care about their employees.

Driver safety also extends to the general public and in essence to each employees family and friends and co-workers, as well. Remember;

PNF (Positive, Negative, Feedback)

The PNF program will improve traffic safety performance and minimize the risk of motor vehicle crashes. It is cost-effective and allows for rewards and incentives for drivers that adhere to the policies and procedures as established for driving defensively and safely, while providing remedial training and disciplinary actions for those that do not.

Many studies now indicate that a substantial percentage of drivers involved in preventable crashes are first time offenders.
Although, driver risk profiling is an important part of the overall safe driver equation, the following areas are more important:

1).Scheduled, internet/written, on-going training of drivers with good driving records/performance.

2).Emphasis on “defensive driver training”, in particular the number one cause of all preventable accidents, “aggressive and distracted behavior” as a result of;

  • Speeding
  • Driving while emotionally upset
  • Talking on a cell phone
  • Eating, reading, reaching for objects, etc. while driving.
  • Driving while drowsy; this is now considered as serious as DWI.
3).Driver training based on a drivers geographical work zones.

4).Include “negligent maintenance” as unsafe driving and operation of a vehicle.
